Instructions

Below are the questions and tasks you will be asked to complete in Test 2: Part 2. I suggest working on them in a word file, then copying and pasting answers as appropriate, though some answers are multiple choice. This link takes you to a word file you can download and use.

Once you answer a question, you cannot return to it, and once begin the quiz, you cannot leave it, so be sure your answers are ready and completed. Please also note the questions may not be presented to you on the test in this same order.

 

  1. Access to the internet (5 pts)

In at least a paragraph and drawing upon what we discussed in class and what you believe to be true about the usefulness of access to the internet, explain why or why not access to the internet is a rightful utility at home, like gas, water, and sewer, and should be subsidized for people who could otherwise not afford it. Be sure to include some specific examples when explaining your position.

  1. Cockfighting (5 points)

Referring specifically to the Geertz text (actual text pages 1-6, not counting title page), how is cockfighting part of the non-material culture for the Balinese? The text is attached here.

  1. Commercial (4 pts)

Watch this commercial and apply at least three elements of the sociological imagination/sociological elements (think about what we talked about, especially, in the first unit in class) to the following commercial. Be sure to cite specific examples from the commercial, including the timestamp.

(3 points for the thoroughness of each of the elements, including using the timestamps; 1 point for the quality of the writing)

 

  1. KS foster care (2 pts)

In 2020 fiscal year, 3,477 Kansas children were removed from their homes and placed into foster care. This was reported on the FY 2020 Removals, Exits and Out of Home Summary provided by the Kansas Department for Children and Families. Your task is to find the 2021 summary and report the total number of removals for the state of Kansas in the 2021 fiscal year.

Think about the social problem you wrote about in class. Using the university database, find a peer-reviewed article from within the last 5 years that addresses some aspect of your social problem and paste the university permalink here. Then, in a few sentences, explain what your social problem is and why you believe this article would be useful in a discussion about your social problem.
